ERP and the Realm of Money<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

ERP systems have \u201creplaced\u201d accounting and billing applications, among others, relegating them to a niche market geared toward smaller business units that don\u2019t require \u201cas much\u201d for their financial management.<\/p>\n\n

It soon became clear that the company was open to \u201cover-investment\u201d in this area.<\/p>\n\n

As a result, all kinds of ERP systems proliferated, some of which turned out to be a real \u201cbottomless pit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

As a result, the strongest players created large corporations, and their current acquisitions are no longer just for management purposes, but also to \u201cshow off\u201d and thereby sell more than the competition.<\/p>\n\n

Because getting it up and running isn’t exactly cheap, and its flexibility isn’t within everyone’s budget.<\/p>\n\n

“Expensive” is relative\u2026 if you measure it by the profit<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Although \u201cexpensive\u201d is a relative term, since it should be inversely proportional to the profit earned. And that profit, of course, should be measurable. <\/p>\n\n

The \u201ccontroversial\u201d thing about ERP systems is that they try to \u201csell\u201d us on the idea that \u201cintegrated\u201d is better than \u201cintegratable.\u201d Not so fast, Pedr\u00edn!! <\/p>\n\n

Integrated doesn’t always mean better<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

And that’s why they offer us “everything” and more there.<\/p>\n\n

It’s very “clunky” and impractical.<\/p>\n\n

We aren’t investing too much in it because this “new venture” isn’t really a “business”\u2014beyond being able to say, “Yes, we have that, too!!”<\/p>\n\n

More of a sales pitch than a proven fact.<\/p>\n\n

The thing is, you can’t be good at \u201ceverything\u201d!!!<\/p>\n\n

Specialization matters, too<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

A \u201cgeneral\u201d approach cobbled together haphazardly or plucked out of thin air is no better than \u201cintegrable\u201d specialization.<\/p>\n\n

Have they tried to convince you, too, of how ideal it is to manage a warehouse for maintenance \u201cspare parts\u201d using the same system used for raw materials and production supplies?<\/p>\n\n

If you can, you can. As the saying goes: \u201cWhen there\u2019s no bread, cakes will do.\u201d <\/p>\n\n

What the ERP *SHOULD* Manage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Inventory receipts, overall inventory control, the unit cost applicable at any given time, procurement management, and \u201cspare parts\u201d receipts MUST be managed exclusively by an ERP system, along with other materials, using a common strategy. Amen!! <\/p>\n\n

Because that’s where ERP makes sense.<\/p>\n\n

Because that’s where we discuss: purchasing, tickets, costs, accounting, overall inventory, and a common materials strategy.<\/p>\n\n

What the CMMS MUST Manage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

That said, once we have the \u201creplacement\u201d on hand, managing multiple warehouse locations MUST be the responsibility of the CMMS.<\/p>\n\n

And it should be managed by maintenance staff, who are the ones who use them exclusively and, therefore, the ones who \u201cput up with\u201d them.<\/p>\n\n

A Maintenance department that, in addition to its technicians, should have management \u201cpersonnel,\u201d just like other departments.<\/p>\n\n

Spare parts have a life of their own<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Transactions such as relocations, reservations, deliveries, returns, and the use of \u201cspare parts\u201d linked to actions recorded in work orders are specific cases involving \u201cspare parts\u201d that do not occur in the management of other types of materials. Nor do their use or purpose. <\/p>\n\n

Multilevel classification: in a league of its own<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

And what about the \u201cmulti-level\u201d classification!!<\/p>\n\n

Because not everything can be treated as a simple inventory item.<\/p>\n\n

Not everything is analyzed the same way.<\/p>\n\n

Not everything is consumed the same way.<\/p>\n\n

Not everything behaves the same way, nor does it have the same criticality or the same impact on maintenance.<\/p>\n\n

Measure Accurately to Make Better Decisions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

You wouldn’t actually think of compiling statistics on a specific “blade” model, would you??<\/p>\n\n

The appeal isn’t just in knowing that a blade has been used up.<\/p>\n\n

The key is being able to analyze: what type of blade, on which machine, in which process, how often, at what associated cost, and under what maintenance procedures or interventions.<\/p>\n\n
